1. What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?
IUI an artificial insemination method is one of the procedures used to treat infertility. Semen sample is washed & processed, the concentrated motile sperms from the male partner are placed/deposited into a woman’s uterus around the time of ovulation, through a fine catheter (tube) inserted through the cervix, this helps the sperm for its journey towards the fallopian tubes to fertilize the viable egg (Oocyte).
2. Why is IUI done / what are the Reasons for doing IUI?
- Low sperm Count / poor sperm motility of male partner
- Ejaculation problem (very early ejaculation by male partner)
- Problem in erection (erectile dysfunction of male partner)
- Retrograde Ejaculation – semen enter the bladder instead of emerging through the penis during orgasm in male partner
- Mild Endometriosis – Tissue that normally lines the inside of uterus grows in other places where it doesn’t belong, such as ovaries & fallopian tube.
- Mucus Hostility – Problem of mucus production may arise due to vaginal infection or presence of antisperm/antibodies in the mucus of female.
- Cervix Issues – Defect/problem in the cervix of the female partner
- Physical problem with sexual intercourse – Due to Vaginismus an involuntary clamping of vaginal muscles, it may prevent from having frequent intercourse in some women.
- Unexplained infertility (no defined causes of infertility) – in about 10 -15% of couple.
3. How is IUI done (Procedure)?
Usually, the woman is given fertility drugs to stimulate the development of eggs.
The male partner’s semen sample after 3-5 days of abstinence (no intercourse) is “washed” in the laboratory & dead sperms & other cells are separated out. This process helps select healthy moving sperms & maximizes the number of sperms that are placed in the uterus, thus increasing the possibility of conception. After preparation, the sperm concentrate is placed through the cervix into the uterus using a thin, flexible catheter. After the procedure, the patient can resume usual activates.
3. Are there any tests necessary before deciding to do IUI?
AKRUTI IVF doctor will take a medical & personal history and may suggest a few tests before starting IUI treatment such as
Test for female –
- Sonosalpingography (SSG) – Test to check if the fallopian tubes are open or blocked (so that the sperm can enter the fallopian tube to fertilize the egg & the fertilized egg can come out in the uterus) also to check inside the uterus if it is of a normal size and shape.
- Blood hormone levels
- Other test for ruling out infections.
Test for Male –
- SFA (sperm function Analysis) – to know the quality, count, activity (Motility), Shape (Morphology)
- DNA fragmentation Index test – to know damaged DNA in sperm, higher DFI (DNA fragmentation Index) test means higher damaged sperm DNA.
4. Does IUI cause any kind of discomfort?
Most women consider IUI to be fairly painless as the catheter usually doesn’t cause much of a discomfort. Sometimes there can be a little cramping that may not be related to the IUI or a mild pinching sensation.
5. How soon after an IUI can a woman have intercourse?
Typically the couple can have intercourse any time after an IUI, in fact intercourse is suggested in the following evening of IUI; it increases the chances of pregnancy.
But if there was any kind bleeding or complication during the IUI, at AKRUTI IVF doctors may suggest waiting for 2 days before having intercourse.

7. How many infertility treatment cycles should be done with IUI?
A few women may conceive within the first 3 attempts after which the chances for success decreases. Therefore, IUI treatment is usually recommended for a maximum of about 3 or 4 cycles.
But if the fertility health of the women & sperm quality of male is not up to the mark the infertility specialist doctor may suggest going for IVF or ICSI either directly or after even one or two IUI cycle.
