What is Endometrium and why is Endometrium required?

Endometrium is like a safety bed for the baby (embryo) on which it Rests (implants) & the endometrium also provides nutrition to the implanted embryo. Endometrium is the inner lining of the uterus which undergoes changes & become thick (decidualization). A good endometrium is 7-12mm which is considered for a healthy pregnancy. Below 7mm is considered as Thin Endometrium which is not good for implantation.

Some of the causes of thin endometrium are

  • Hormonal issues – Fluctuations in the estrogen and progesterone levels in blood can lead to hormonal imbalance.
  • Chronic infection – your endometrial lining can be damaged, due to some chronic infections, sometimes they can be acute infections too. Infections can be bacterial or fungal. Most common Chronic Infection is Female Genital tuberculosis. Chronic Tuberculosis results in increase in inflammatory cells on endometrium, can be fixed by anti-estrogen medications and Anti-tubercular medications
  • Age – As you grow older, your ovaries produce lesser Hormone, ultimately leading to thin endometrium lining. Post menopausal women’s have thin lining due to poor estrogen levels.
  • Improper Surgery or D&C – Any earlier surgeries done not performed by surgeon well versed with fertility saving surgery can hamper the endometrium health. Medical abortions or any adhesions in uterine cavity can also effect endometroum.
  • Poor blood flow – In our body, blood supply plays a vital role for maintaining a good and healthy function for every organ. Uterine arteries are the supply house of blood to uterus and endometrium. If the blood is not supplied properly, then there are chances of implantation failure or abortions.
  • Fibroids – : Fibroids do affect the chances of having a successful pregnancy.  At times they can be small as benign, but sometimes they can be large making uterus Bulgy impairing Endometrium thickness.
  • PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome): If you are not getting your menses on time or it’s delayed by 2-3 months i.e., an an-ovulatory or impaired ovulation can also be the reason behind thin endometrium.

Endometrial PRP

Endometrial PRP or Endometrial Rejuvenation or endometrial regenerative therapy is a PRP (Platelet rich Plasma) based treatment which is done to repair & prepare the endometrium tissue to increase its thickness & quality for better implantation of the embryo.

Hysteroscopic PRP

To improve endometrial thickness & blood flow of a thin or a refractive endometrium in female, the endometrium is scratched & the PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is injected in the sub-endometrial area of the uterus under ultrasound guidance.
