What is Y chromosome micro-deletions test?
At Akruti IVF, Y chromosome Micro-deletion is done to find out the presence of sperm in the male testes (2 small organs inside scrotum). Y chromosome Micro-deletion is the missing or deletion of Y chromosome. The Y chromosome determines the male sex in humans and is transferred from one generation to another forming a genetic link. Thus Y chromosome micro-deletion causes male infertility.
Y chromosome is a gene which helps in sperm production is males; Humans have 2 chromosomes; Male – XY & Female – XX.
Men with Y chromosome micro-deletions cannot have a child naturally, these men may produce semen (fluid with sperm helping sperm travel) but it will not have any sperms (observed under microscope examination).
Such condition is called Azoospermia (no sperm cells) or oligozoospermia (very few sperm cells).
How is the Y chromosome micro-deletion test performed?
Y chromosome micro-deletion detection PCR test is a genetic test that helps in identifying any deletion of genes on the Y chromosome in men. The male patient would be asked to give a sample of blood (like a routine blood test) which would then be sent to the laboratory for analysis. The genetic material (DNA) from the blood sample would then be extracted, so that the Y chromosome can be studied to determine whether there are any missing genes or defects in the AZF regions and the extent of any defects seen. This would help doctors identify the reason for male infertility and plan a proper course of treatment for your IVF cycle.
Who requires Y chromosome microdeletion test?
The Y micro-deletion test is recommended in men who have:
- non-obstructive azoospermia
- very low sperm concentration (oligozoospermia)
- if you have a family history of azoospermia or Y chromosome micro-deletions
- if you do not have any other symptoms and you have done your reproductive physical examination and semen analysis which suggest a problem
